Abstract

A new combination of hardware and software has been developed for the monitoring of the resin flow during the injection in the production of carbon-fibre composites. New sensors have been developed that can be placed all around and inside the tool in order to measure accurately and securely resin arrival at the inlet and outlet gates (new inline sensors), in the laminate (new wire sensors) and directly in contact with the carbon fibres without needing any protection (new durable sensors). All these sensors can be connected in a single monitoring system (Optiflow32) and can produce valuable data either during the process development phase or even at production.
In the conference the application of this complete intelligent flow monitoring system will be presented, analysed and validated in the development of two carbon-reinforced epoxy parts, one for aerospace and one very thick. From four to six durable resin arrival sensors were placed at critical locations to inform about the appropriate impregnation of the carbon preforms combined with inline durable sensors at specific gates and wire sensors for through-thickness flow monitoring.
Based on the feedback from the sensors the real-time control of the resin flow is possible either directly by the monitoring device or through the DAQ system.
